PROGRAM NOTE:
“Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!”
I confess I had not remembered Goliad: that place where 400 men fighting for Texas independence from Mexico were lined up and executed by firing squad. Upon learning that I descended from one of 28 who survived and escaped, I was overwhelmed by not knowing I owed my entire life to the luck and tenacity of a 17-year-old in 1836. This piece is a reflection on the oft-forgotten tomb of Goliad and its unknowing descendants.
